FOR CONTEXT: Clix was streaming inside of a local mall in Florida when emergency services evacuated a mall after a swatting call attempt. His car was of interest to the authorities and he was eventually cleared after being detained.
Boca Raton, FL — Twitch streamer Cody “Clix” Conrod found himself at the center of a terrifying incident on September 14th, when a swatting attempt led to his detainment by Boca Raton Police. The incident occurred in the afternoon hours at the Town Center Mall, which was shut down for hours as authorities responded to the call.
Swatting is when someone makes a prank call to bring a large emergency response to a location. According to Florida law:
837.05?False reports to law enforcement authorities.—
(1)?Except as provided in subsection (2), whoever knowingly gives false information to any law enforcement officer concerning the alleged commission of any crime, commits a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.
(2)?Whoever knowingly gives false information to a law enforcement officer concerning the alleged commission of a capital felony, commits a felony of the third degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084.
Swatting, a dangerous hoax where false threats are reported to law enforcement to provoke an armed response, has been a recurring issue for public figures, particularly streamers. The incident highlights the growing concern over streamer safety both online and in real life.
The false report involved a caller claiming they were parked on the north side of the mall, prompting a heavy police response. According to NBC affiliate WPTV, law enforcement focused its attention on Clix’s rented car, which was identified as part of the threat. While Clix cooperated with the authorities, he was detained for questioning as part of the investigation.
According to police, Clix tells police that someone who was watching his stream may be behind the swatting call as a hoax.
Fortunately, no one was harmed, and the mall was eventually cleared after a thorough sweep by the police. Clix was not arrested, and the police are now working to track down the individual responsible for the swatting call.
